Release Date: November 2012

Plot Outline: An airline pilot saves his passengers from a nearly fatal crash but through the investigation it comes out that he is a drug addict.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Bechdel Test: Fail

Flight was not at all what I expected. I got a completely different idea about the movie from the trailer but I got a lot more than I expected. Flight was not only an action movie, it was the dramatic story of a man (Denzel Washington) battling addiction. Flight had great acting (duhhhh Denzel) and raw emotions. At times Flight was difficult to watch because you are watching a character you have come to care about spin out of control.  Whip (Denzel Washington) continues to destroy his life and you can’t help but care. The writers did a great job of making Whip a likeable, sympathetic character. He has demons but he isn’t demonized because of his addiction. Whip is the underdog we are rooting for. He is an addict that we desperately want to get clean.

Flight brings you through many ups and downs. I smiled, I laughed, I cried, I sighed often.

Flight is a fantastic movie that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. This is a film I highly recommend!

Wow! What an emotional roller-coaster of a drama! I was so involved with this film that nothing else in the world existed. Everything about this film was phenomenal! The acting, the story line, the dialogue, the characters, the relationships, the music…everything was great.

Everyone I know that has seen this film absolutely loved it. I highly recommend this to everyone. It was unique and heart felt and genuine. Each character had their own set of issues that they were trying to survive through and I couldn’t help but root for every single one of them. It was very emotional and beautiful to watch. You will laugh, you will cry, you will smile, you will think about Short Term 12 for a long time after seeing it.

Plot Outline: A group of people are struggling with sex addiction and relationships in their lives.

Rating: 4/5

What a truly phenomenal film! I had no idea that it was produced by Edward Norton. Now that I know, it all makes perfect sense.

I honestly do not know much about sex addiction or the everyday struggles that come along with it so I do not know if this film gives an accurate representation of those struggles. However, it did seem to do a good job sharing the experiences and struggles of people dealing with any sort of addiction.

First of all, each and every character was fantastic. The characters were all so real, and complex, and genuine. They felt like real people with real feelings and real struggles. They weren’t so black and white. Each character, especially Adam (Mark Ruffalo) and Phoebe (Gwyneth Paltrow) struggled with conflicting feelings.

The film brought each of the characters to vulnerable, uncomfortable emotional places you don’t see very often in films. The raw emotions felt so real and the characters bring the audience there with them. There were times I felt sad, hurt, and uncomfortable throughout the film, which I absolutely loved. I felt invested in the characters and their relationships.

The music in this film was perfectly selected. It always did a great job of heightening the emotions in each scene.

Overall, Thanks For Sharing was fantastic and I highly recommend it!

Teenage Dirtbag

Release Date: October 20th 2009

Bechdel Test: Fail

Plot Outline: A girl is tormented by the schools outcast until they take a creative writing class together.

Last night I was in the mood to watch a movie. I turned on and off three different movies within 10 minutes. I just couldn’t get into anything.

I was browsing Netflix’s Instant movies and came across Teenage Dirtbag. I read the description and decided to give it a try, especially because it is based on a true story.

Within the first few minutes I loved it already. It was just what I was in the mood for.

Though the movie stays on the surface for the most part, there are large hints and indications of two very tragic lives. These two characters Thayer and Amber are both suffering in different ways. They don’t connect to anyone else and it seems that they never really had anyone to talk to.

A lot of the movie is made up of hints, undertones, facial expressions, and actions. There aren’t really any significant or deep conversations that form their strong bond. With Thayer and Amber it’s all in their small gestures of care towards each other. The actions and looks in Teenage Dirtbag spoke louder than any conversation ever could have.

Thayer and Amber start an unexpected connection. I loved that they didn’t have a lot of conversation but they really felt each other and saw into each other’s souls. They connected on a very deep level and their connection was intense. A significant scene in the film is when Amber takes out an orange from her book bag and rolls it to Thayer during study hall. Small gestures like this, telling looks and body language speak loudly in the film.

Thayer and Amber had a love for each other that can’t be expressed in words and they cared for each other very much but unfortunately two scarred people often hurt each other as much as they care for each other.

Teenage Dirtbag was incredibly powerful. I felt very attached to it and I know I will be thinking about it for days. I even went back and rewatched a few scenes.

Great film. It was extremely well made. I can’t get over it. And the acting was phenomenal.

Sunshine Cleaning

Posted in Must See! with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 22, 2011 by Des

Release Date: March 27th 2009

Bechdel Test: Pass

Plot Outline: Rose (Amy Adams) decides to open a bio-hazard removal business in order to raise money for her troubled son’s tuition for private school.

Sunshine Cleaning was something else; it was incredible and so enjoyable to watch. It unleashed so much emotion. I couldn’t believe it. I was so beyond impressed by the plot, the acting, and the characters…everything. It was an incredible movie all around. It was truly a phenomenal film. I bought it right away.

Sunshine Cleaning surrounds Rose (Amy Adams) and her hopeless, less than fantastic life. Rose is a woman in love with a married man who only uses her for sex; she has no money and is raising a son and caring for her father (Alan Arkin) with the help of her younger sister (Emily Blunt). Rose has many ghosts that haunt her from her past, one of which was finding her mother dead from suicide. Rose’s life is a mess to say the least.

You can’t help but pity and want to help her. She is so caring and loving and beautiful that you just want good things for her but her life is terrible. You feel hopeless for Rose but she isn’t. She has big dreams and is determined to make them reality. She struggles with moving on and pushing forward but she manages to do it with the help of her son sister, and quirky father.

Sunshine Cleaning contained a really great message. Push forward, take control of your life, and live your life to its fullest potential. The only person in control of your life is you. Change is possible. It contained all of these great, inspiring messages.

Sunshine Cleaning was full of inspiration and hope even when nothing seems to be going right and all your hopes, dreams, and goals are crumbling around you. I feel like it is something everyone can relate to from at least one point in his or her lives.

I simply cannot say enough positive things about this movie. I highly, HIGHLY recommend seeing Sunshine Cleaning. Just buy it. It’s a movie everyone should see and own. Writing this is making me want to re-watch it now.
